Abstract

This work provides an in-depth exploration of the experience of the US Marine Corps during the so-called small wars era, 1915-1934, with an emphasis on the marines' employment of aviation. The introduction gives a brief history of the Marine Corps up to World War I, an explanation of small wars as a concept, and terms and definitions. The chapters are chronological, addressing the origins of Marine Corps aviation prior to and during American involvement in World War I and the Marine Corps' interventions in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, northern China, and Nicaragua.

Abstract

Marine Corps doctrinal publication (MCDP) 3, Expeditionary Operations, establishes doctrine for the conduct of military operations by the U.S. Marine Corps. It describes the Marine Corps as an expeditionary force-in-readiness that is manned, trained, and equipped specifically to respond quickly to a broad variety of crises and conflicts across the full range of military operations anywhere in the world. It emphasizes the naval character of Marine Corps forces ... This publication is compatible with the Marine Corps' capstone doctrinal publication, MCDP 1, Warfighting ... Where MCDP 1 describes the Marine Corps' philosophy of warfighting, this publication describes the types of operations of which Marine Corps forces must be capable."

Abstract

Much has been written about America's war in Vietnam, and an enduring and troubling subtext is the composition of the body of soldiers that made up the U.S. troop deployment: from the initially well-trained and disciplined group of largely elite units that served in the mid-sixties to what has been termed an "armed mob" by the end of that decade and into the early 1970's. Drug use, insubordination, racial antagonism that often became violent, theft and black market dealing, and even "fragging" (murder of officers and senior noncoms by disgruntled troops) marred the record of the U.S. military....

Abstract

Just out of high school in 1977, her personal life already a mess, Tracy Crow thought the Marines might straighten her out. And sure enough, in the Corps she became a respected public affairs officer and military journalist-one day covering tank maneuvers or beach assaults, the next interviewing the secretary of the navy. But success didn't come without a price. When Crow pledged herself to God, Corps, and Country, women Marines were still a rarity, and gender inequality and harassment were rampant. Determined to prove she belonged, Crow always put her career first-even when, after two miscarr
